Once the players start doing overland exploration, I think I will do "getting there" as a session and "getting back" as a session (though we'll see how the pacing works out in practice). I think that's about right for the 2-3 hours that G+ hangouts tend to me.Necropraxishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12716340801054739658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4829093857574761981.post-68077495443891506382012-08-24T22:33:12.050+01:002012-08-24T22:33:12.050+01:00Smart players know to always leave the dungeon rig...Smart players know to always leave the dungeon right at session's end, banking on the GM letting them start next session safe in town! >:)

By contrast, leaving early or staying in the dungeon between sessions are both fraught with danger...Simonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01173759805310975320noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4829093857574761981.post-63775242165249980732012-08-24T15:28:44.757+01:002012-08-24T15:28:44.757+01:00That makes good sense. I think that the trip back is often just as, if not more, important than the trip there. Namely because your group now has diminished resources, bags full of loot to slow them down and guard, and the journey is still just as hazardous as the way there.

The way I often handle it is basically judging how the group has attempting to minimise these factors. If they've rested and healed up whilst fortified up in the dungeon (not luxurious but a tactically superior choice) and they've left behind the bags of second-hand armour, and other "steal the door and nails" loot, then I'm generally inclined to let it be skipped over as anything encountered will be minimal risk and just "busy work".

If, however, they choose to race back whilst still wounded (due to a time constraints etc) or try to take every possible bit of wealth they can to a point of overburdening - or choose to take a slightly different route home for whatever reason - well then I roll to see if they do get more encounters. They are after all willingly taking a risk with those choices, or at least trying to maximise their loot/experience/area knowledge... as such that comes with the potential for extra drama.PseudoFentonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14054154200055912286noreply@blogger.com
