Interlude: Encounter Map, 1 Hex Radius

Additional to the 5-mile hex posts, when a "ring" of hexes around Alakran is completed I am going to post the current state of the encounter map. This is a referece I use when characters are traveling and camping outside of settlements. It shows the time of activity (Day, Night, Any) and range in 5 mile hexes (0-2) of creatures and townsfolk likely to be encountered outside of their lair. These are used in conjunction with my wilderness hexcrawl system, applying common sense (for example, non-flying creatures cannot cross the Scarp).

So for example, if you are traveling through the Bronze Tree's hex you might encounter townsfolk from Alakran by day (although some few encounters in Hex #1 can happen by night), gnolls from the east by day or night, plus whatever is lurking north and west in the next ring with a range 1+, and whatever has a range of 2 in the next ring beyond that.

How many hex rings in 365 days? 1 + 6 + 12 + 18 + 24 + 30 + 36 + 42 + 48 + 54 + 60 = 334 with 35 to spare. So, we are looking at a 50 mile radius from Alakran plus a little more. Probably I will depart at some point from the ring scheme, as the campaign area to the south was not so well developed.

  1. Interesting take, I like it. Ten rings of hexes fitting nicely into a year makes me want to try this too (maybe next year depending how the dungeon goes) - thanks for the inspiration!

  2. Glad to inspire! A 5-hex-across area of 25 miles has 19 core hexes and can also take on 12 additional hexes shared with adjacent 25-mile regions, for a less ambitious 31 day project
