Hex Crawl 23 #135: The District of Halki

Nine hexes north, one northwest of Alakran.

Halki is a cattle town, with very few crafts and trades -- people tend just to go to Anani for those, and for major occasions of worship -- but plenty of pens, ranches, and grain farms dedicated to cattle fodder, for the pasture land high up the river is thin and cattle are kept for work beasts. The industry supports 700 souls all told, many of whom work in the surrounding fields and return to town to live, for the Halki district is a gregarious one.

Of their many festivals the most notable one is the Bull Wrestling - which includes running, riding, chasing, and other taurine sports. It is held on the first day of the second month (Iyarru in Urighem and Wahattu). Success or at least competence in the events of the festival is much valued, and the men and unmarried women of Halki dedicate themselves to fitness, running, stretching, or lifting weights when other villagers would be engaged in other pursuits. Thus the saying, "A man of Halki, he may be ugly, but he won't be soft."
